Title: Is it possible to upgrade the PTO on a MTZ 820?
Post by: ohb on July 02, 2018, 09:35:36 AM
This is NOT about changing brake bands, or adjusting them. I know how to do it, I have done it several times, and I believe I have done it correctly too.

This is about making the PTO stronger (withstanding more torque before slipping). My tractor has 110 hp (due to added turbo charger) in stead of the original 80 hp or so. When running at  full engine speed, the tractor is simply too strong for the PTO. In addition to proper adjustments, I have also ditched the standard gear oil for a wet brake oil, giving somewhat better friction for the brake bands. Still, it is not enough.

I would be surprised if no one else has ever attempted to upgrade the PTO, or at least modifying it. So far I have not been able find any info about this on the internet. If anybody knows something, please let me know.

The 1220 series (122 hp 4 cyl and 136 hp 6 cyl) and up ditched the band PTO in favor of more robust setup.
No idea if it's backward compatible with 820

What are you running that requires full 110hp?? Does it not have a slip clutch and if so make sure it isn't seized.

I have a 825 and have run stuff that maxes out its hp at times (disc mower) and never touched the pto in 25 years.  Also the larger size models 100hp use the same system.
